This application note demonstrates how the X9241 E2POT digital potentiometer, with its two-wire serial interface, can be used on a microcontroller port using dedicated I2C control hardware. Although the X9241 does not attempt to follow the standard I2C protocol, it is possible, with some restrictions, to implement all of the X9241 instructions using I2C control hardware. The restrictions to interfacing the X9241 depends on the I2C control hardware being used. Specifically, it depends on whether the I2C control hardware is bit-wide or bytewide orientated.
