Hi,

I might want to use the FMC Carrier S6 for a school project. I've been looking for a Spartan 6 FPGA board with a high pin count (around 100), and it looks like this board might work. (Unless, is there another Spartan 6 FPGA board with a high pin count?)

Regarding the FMC socket, are the pins configured as I/O the same way pins are configured on, say, the PMODs of a Nexys 3? Are the FMC pins high-speed or low-speed? Is a socket connector required or is it easy to wire into the socket? Is there a socket connector that would go well with a PCB?

Yes socket connector required, But that FMC socket conector suppose to mount on daugher board.

FMC connectors are sort of expensive and a little difficult for hobbyists to solder. The FMC Carrier S6 board is also pretty expensive for what you get. I'd only use it if you were interested in an existing FMC board, or if you were designing an FMC board and didn't have the budget for a much better FPGA dev board such as the SP605.
 
If your requirement is for Spartan-6 and high I/O count but not particularly high speed I/O (what are you doing?), you could consider the Numato Saturn or ZTEK USB-FPGA.

For my senior project, I want to build an ASIC tester using an FPGA board. The chips that we want to be able to test can have upwards to 80 pins.
 
Low-speed pins are not necessarily a problem, though high-speed pins are preferable. It's most important that the speed of the pins are consistent.
