  One thing to consider, if this is a PC controller you are using: there is a limit to the com port numbers.  You can not employ a comport over COM12.  I have been told that this has been corrected in the latest version of software, but not that I can tell.

  If you have series 5, or ASRU N card, you have additional cabilities to control in fixture communications

there is USB signals routed for use with Cover Extend, so whilst these are not 'official' USB - it will work for communicating with a relay board

there is also a dedicated fixture power supply, that can be turned on and off from testplan,

whilst this is not directly addressing your VPC query, then its another option

for VPC, my recommendation would be to make a small bt basic routine and try it on your laptop - test development software is relatively inexpensive and you can try these experiements without tying up your testhead,
